Executive Director of the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (NCCJ)

Our current Executive Director will start a new job early next year and we are looking for her replacement. 

As an Executive Director, you will be the general manager and official representative of our Chamber. You will lead a small team and be responsible for the overall management of the chamber activities. 

Our Executive Director experiences much freedom and has a great opportunity to influence his or her own working situation. You will communicate closely with the board of directors and have opportunities to influence the focus and direction of the chamber. You will also act as a bridge between the Norwegian business community and the Norwegian Embassy, and cooperate closely with the rest of Team Norway (MFA, Innovation Norway, Norwegian Seafood Council, Visit Norway) on a daily basis, to enhance the activities in the Norwegian community as a whole.

The role is an ideal career development position. You will be able to gain valuable leadership opportunity and experience from working closely with our members and partners. You will have a chance to expand your business network in the Norwegian, international, and Japanese business environment and gain insights into a variety of business segments and sectors in Japan. 

The position is Tokyo-based and you will report to the President of the Chamber firstly and to Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading a small team of one to two persons, daily management of the NCCJ

  • Member recruitment and retention. 

  • Plan and conduct events and member activities in close co-operation with the Board of Directors. Arrange meetings, such as Board meetings, General Assemblies and similar when needed

  • Regular communication with members and partners. via newsletters, webpage, social media (Facebook) and direct contact. 

  • Be responsible for the NCCJ financials including reporting and budgeting.


Qualifications

We look for a person who has 

  • Good self-management skills, interest and drive for working for a membership-based organization, and work to improve relevance for our members. 

  • People management skills and interest in good leadership. 

  • Excellent communication skills and digital proficiency on the use of social media. 

  • Ability to nurture and develop professional relations with members and partners. 

  • The role offers freedom and flexibility to control your working hours. However, from time to time, work during evenings is required.

  • Strategic thinking; able to chart the course of engagement events and solicitations to achieve goals; able to create detailed action plans to deliver results expected.

  • Result-oriented mindset; follows through and completes tasks at exceptionally high levels, often inventing novel solutions to challenging problems.

  • An open mind; willing to consider and accept different perspectives.

  • Cultural sensitivity and understanding of Japanese and Norwegian cultures.

  • First-hand knowledge about Norway and Norwegian business is a plus; however, a candidate with strong interest and ability to learn is equally welcome.

  • Fluency in Norwegian and business level in English is a must. Japanese is a plus. 

  • A confirmed visa status to work in Japan. 

The position is currently not a full-time position but about 100 hours every month.  The role may be combined with other work or engagements. We may also consider increasing the scope of the position if the right candidate.  Compensation will be decided based on experience.
